The first thing that I sewed!
What was the first thing that you ever made?
I asked myself the same question and to work out the first thing I ever made would be really hard. I come from a family of woodwork teachers, textiles teachers, fashion designers, draftsmen and amazing knitters so I was making and drawing as far back as I can remember!
Instead I narrowed it down to the first thing that I ever sewed. I spoke to my Mum about it and she could clearly remember the make up bag that I had made for her birthday, what was even better was that she still had it!
I must have been about 6 when I made it and as you can see from the photo below there is a very professional finish!! The seams are made with a child's sewing machine and I've hand stitched the zip with some rather large running stitches.
The front has appliqued (glued on) birds and the letter M. I'm not sure if this was for make up or Mum but its definitely not my mum's initial!
The photo is me aged about 3. I had a bit of an obsession with make up and clearly knew which parts of my face it should go on but my technique definitely needed work. I think this might be why I made the make up bag, hoping that I would get hold of some of the make up it was destined to hold.
It was fun looking back at what I had made and I was so proud that my Mum had kept it all this time.
I'm pleased to say that my sewing skills have improved somewhat since then especially with my Mum's expert tuition!
What was the first thing that you ever sewed? Do you still have it?
